Mademoiselle chats with Skull and Cross Buns Stamps

Written by Carolyn Henry
For Mademoiselle Rachel her first bite of a macaron represented a moment of luxury and as such, we strive to ensure that each of our customers experiences a taste of Paris with every bite. That's why we only work with likeminded companies.

We wanted to make sure our little moment of indulgence with French macarons could be made even more fun with something special. that's why we have worked to find little presents that we'd love to receive as well as gift. Our May box sees a very special addition as we dream of a Kenwood mixer in every colour of our macarons! We sat down for a (virtual!) cup of tea with Emily from Skull & Cross Buns to chat about stamps, hobbies becoming businesses and macarons, of course...!

MM x Skull & Cross Buns
Tell us a little about yourself, what's your business, and when did you start?

My name is Emily Fox and I run Skull and Cross Buns, scrumptious rubber stamps from heavenly Devon! I started the business in 2009 after many years of rubber stamping and papercrafting from my childhood to looking for a hobby to pick up again after university but not quite getting the designs I wanted to use with my slightly more alternative tastes. So with my background in retail and artistic flair I started to create my own! Nearly 15 years later we have made and sold over 120k stamps all over the world, stocked in many gorgeous shops in the UK and USA and can count Royalty, Olympians, Dragon's Den, rock and soap stars in our loyal customer base!

What do you consider your moment of luxury?

My favourite moments of luxury are when I've sent out our orders for the day and my partner Jon gets back from his farming duties (he's a sheep farmer and makes all our wooden stamp blocks too!) and we light the fire, make a fresh pour-over coffee, have a little sweet treat (like macarons!) and debrief our days and just take a moment to stop and relax a while.

What’s your favourite flavour of macaron?

So hard to choose a favourite flavour of macaron but I love the lavender flavour, very delicate but so moreish!

How do you serve / enjoy your macarons?

I like to enjoy my macarons with a nice bit of peace and quiet! And a nice piping hot cup of tea, something refreshing but doesn't take away from the brilliant flavours of the macarons.

What do you love about your job?

The thing I love most about my job is creating a range of products that delight our customers and will give them many more years of creative enjoyment, just like the stamps I was given as a little girl that are still perfect to use all these years later.

What other small businesses do you love and support?

My favourite small businesses?  That's so hard to choose as I work closely with so many amazing ones and have so many very talented small biz friends but a special shout out to Pom Stitch Tassel who sell the cutest craft kits and run fantastic work shops for all ages from their Devonshire shop and Molly Ginnelly Jewellery, who creates some of the most beautiful bespoke jewellery, which I very proudly own a few pieces of her work.

What makes you stand out from other businesses?

Oh I don't know! I'd like to think it's that I've always been passionate about papercrafting and it's still something I love - and I hope that comes across in every stamp I create and make.

Emily, we're so excited that we're including your cute Kenwood Stamp in our May Subscription Box - and we can't wait to see if a macaron stamp is next up on the stamp block...!

Merci & Bisous! Rachel x
